cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is in downtown oakland where the damage is still being assessed. >> reporter: good morning, we're here on 20th and franklin where it happened. on the ground you can see a broken beer bottle, paint splashed across the california bank and trust branch, windows broken a lot of them now boarded up. i counted 12 of these large glass windows with some damage. the same thing with businesses across the street. this all happened yesterday. these protestors trashed several blocks in downtown oakland but it all started as an antiwar rally. protestors marking the 11th anniversary of the start of the war in afghanistan. a group of about 200 left from frank ogawa plaza for a march around 7:00 but by 8:15 they had dispersed and went on a vandalism spree. city hall was damaged, protestors smashing the windows. they damaged a half dozen other

businesses including the "oakland tribune" offices, three banks, a kaiser permanente and a.c. transit office and the oakland scientific facility. you're seeing damage on the corner and they covered about three blocks in the downtown area. despite the damage there have been no arrests. in observations, elissa harrington, cbs 5. police arresting 20 people in san francisco during a protest over the weekend. people in black allegedly blocked traffic, vandalized vehicles and businesses on saturday afternoon. officers hit by flares bags of paint. they also contained rocks, as well. police believe some of those arrested were involved in similar activity in the mission district about two weeks ago. a 24-hour long "occupy" san jose rally has been camped out in front of city hall and continues this morning. it's the first overnight protest since they were evicted last year. members say them stay until noon today. the search is on for a killer of a woman in contra

costa county. susie ko was found dead in her hercules home after she failed to pick her husband up at oakland airport. police believe she was killed friday night by someone who stole her car a blue southbound row. ko was a former teacher well thought of by many. her son thinks someone may have been watching the house. >> she felt very comfortable being here and working and doing the landscaping. i can only imagine somebody noticing that pattern and wanting to take advantage of that. >> the victim's children are using social media to help police in the investigation. so far they have 140,000 followers on facebook. a grisly discovery in east oakland. miss say a decomposing body wrapped in cloth was found last night inside a car near intersection of richie and olive next to a rec center in the eastmont neighborhood of oakland. police say the body was there

for some time. another morning another record. governor brown taking stems to ease back on the record gas prices we have been seeing the last couple of weeks. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran down in south san francisco with the idea behind the governor's action. good morning. reporter: good morning. i'm sure a lot of people are waiting for this action. we have one station that's 4.99 for a gallon of regular and this one is $4.79. the governor is calling for the immediate release of a cheaper blend but it is less environmentally friendly. prices are record high in san francisco. $4.73 in san francisco. up 40 to 50 cents from last week. governor brown asked state regulators in an emergency to allow the early sale of the winter blend. that's not normally sold until

november 1. this will bring up gas supplies an estimated 8 to 10%. moisture were cut short after august sheriff -- supplies were cut short after the august chevron fire in richmond and a power failure knocking out a refinery in southern california. >> the chevron problem isn't fixed in richmond, the exxon refinery was off for a couple of days because of a power outage and pipeline disruption is making it hard to get crude. >> reporter: the winter blend evaporates more quickly. selling this early shouldn't have too much impact on is air quality or your prices. even though if this goes through, experts said it could still take a week for a price drop. if you want to find out the cheapest prices, go to cbssf.com/gas and enter your

pg&e's penalties and pipeline upgrade costs for a month. the san francisco board of supervisors will finally decide tomorrow if suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi will keep his job. the mayor charged him with official misconduct and demanded his removal after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in connection to domestic abuse with his wife. we'll find that out tomorrow. this morning a coalition of community groups in san jose plans to announce a boycott of the mi pueblo grocery change linked to the company's participation in the everify program the department of homeland security system to determine people's immigration status. the pumpkin weigh-off this morning in half moon bay. these pumpkins will vie for the world record, a $25,000 megaprize for the world's first one-ton pumpkin. we'll be there when the

competition kicks off on main street live. that's a big squash. >> can you imagine carving that pumpkin? >> or moving it? a busy weekend of events in the bay area is now over chug sporting events at two stadiums in san francisco as well as fleet week and the america's cup. well, at candlestick the 49ers scored a lopsided win over the bills 45-3. the giants were at at&t park hosting the second game of the play-offs against the cincinnati reds. the crowd tried to cheer the home team on but the giants lost the second game in a row 9- 0. and on the bay a spectacular sight as the america's cup wrapped up its five-day series. fans gathered at the waterfront to watch all the action. take a look. oracle team usa took home their second consecutive win. teams will be back next summer for the america's cup regatta. and this was the sight to see thrust the weekend.

move out of town so a chance of showers for tomorrow. another slight chance as we get into wednesday and then the system moves out. computer models picking up on it. occasional passing clouds around the bay area but it won't be until tonight when the low begins to move closer and we'll see clouds overnight tonight into tomorrow morning and maybe a couple of raindrops too. for today, dry, 74 degrees in morgan hill, one. warm spots. 70 san jose. 62 pacifica. east bay temperatures in the 70s in many spots. inside the bay 60s and low 70s in san leandro, 70 novato. next couple of days a slate chance of shower tuesday and wednesday morning. another cove front dives into the bay area friday to bring another chance of showers but that one not impressive. then dry out maybe another nice weekend next weekend, elizabeth. >> we haven't used those rain graphics in a long time.

drop in unemployment. dow up 35. nasdaq lost 13. costs more to get a higher education this year. new data shows tuition and fees at private colleges rose 3.9%. the good news, this year's increase in private college tuition is the smallest on record. investigators new believe that a u.s. border patrol agent killed in arizona was shot by two fellow agents. the deadly shooting happened last week about five miles north of the mexico/arizona border. the border patrol agents union says agent nicholas ivie opened fire thinking the fellow agents were armed smugglers. he was killed in the return fire. former penn state football coach jerry sandusky will be sentenced tomorrow. that's after a hearing determines whether or not he is a sexually violent predator. the assistant coach was at the center of a child sexual abuse scandal and convicted on 45 charges. sandusky is expected to get

life in prison. a farmer at the center of a deadly outbreak has issued a voluntary recall. it's being taken as a precaution because of the risk of potential contamination. the centers for disease control and prevention says there are now more than 90 confirmed cases of fungal meningitis and 7 deaths linked to steroids from the new england company. new study by ucla neurophysicists shows that the sleeping brain behaves as if it was remembering something. researchers say the study helps to explain why you can more easily things you memorized the day before. it's important because humans spend a third of life sleeping and lack of sleep has adverse effects on health, learning and memory.
